Starting from a critical assessment of the main theoretical and empirical approaches in the study of democracy and authoritarianism in the Arab world, the authors investigate the nature and the characteristics of the Arab ‘exceptionalism’, namely the democratic deficit of the countries in the region, as it has emerged in comparative perspective, the main features being recognized in the impact of oil and of international conflicts
